Employee Spotlight – Sumeet Rohatgi

June 23, 2011

What is your name and title?
My name is Sumeet Rohatgi and I am a Sr. Director of Engineering.
When did you join YouSendIt, and what was the one thing that drew you towards this company?
The reason I joined YouSendIt  in 2008 was the opportunity that it gave me to actually explore the file sharing space. I came from a finance background where I worked in e-trade; I worked in a different start up that was all about analytics. File sharing got my attention because here was a company that was actually trying to improve people’s lives by having them share files easily.
Now that you have been here for a couple years, what is one thing you love about working at YouSendIt?
There is no red tape; they company prides itself on transparency of communication. The great thing is that everyone is connected and encouraged to contribute! This is so different than other companies (both big and small).
What is your favorite activity to do for health and wellness time?
I go to the Campbell Community Center to play badminton or swim. Most of us would love to get a massage sometimes, but YouSendIt doesn’t pay for it – yet!
What are a couple things your fellow employees don’t know about you?
Fellow YSI’ers see me more of an Architect & Strategy guy; however, I like to imagine myself as a closet social media maven. I regularly follow twitter activity. I also love the outdoors when I can just relax and someone else did all the planning!

YouSendIt Summer Picnic 2011

June 22, 2011

At the recent company picnic my team placed 2nd! I didn’t get first place… It doesn’t happen often, but when it does –failing carries with it a heavy burden of examining my mistakes and moves to ensure that it is not repeated. Some of you might be familiar with the antics at the 2010 picnic; the team that strove to find and bend every rule just so they could win first place.

This year…everyone else was prepared. Other teams were deeply into figuring out advantage gaining devices of their own.  I saw teams breaking bad with some ingenious “flexibility” of their own.  I saw silliness, craziness, high spirits, and downright, down-to-earth, good natured fun!

I saw a company respond to a perceived threat in a positive and winning fashion.  I saw people who laughed in the face of Adversity (is that really my middle name?) and I saw them overcome.  They had to have overcome – because my team didn’t win.  Disappointing as that may sound at first – I was proud of my company for not letting it happen!  It’s one of the first times in my life I’ve been happy to lose, because I lost to team members with whom I share a great respect – and kinship – and friendship.

There are many days when I look at how hard our jobs are – and how hard we need to work “tomorrow” (and every day after).  But there aren’t many days that I don’t get a smile and a pat on the back, or a friendly nod and sage word of advice or feedback – the kinds of things that in the end – make you smile.  There are very few days indeed that I don’t look forward to arriving at work and dealing with the people I deal with, having my first of many cups of coffee and making a quick tour of the office – getting energized by the folks already hard at it.

There are very few days when I don’t consider my job at YouSendIt a constant reminder that no matter what place my team came in at the picnic – I’m in a numero uno outfit just because I’m here!  Raise a glass to the best outfit I’ve ever worked for…YouSendIt

Do they make a GPS for navigating business growth?

October 8, 2010

Having driven down a few highways you’ve experienced a wide variety of traffic conditions – including a few traffic jams.  Riding my motorcycle through those same conditions, perhaps taking a few more risks, driving a little faster, I might arrive somewhat sooner.  I will however, arrive alone. Driving my car I can bring some friends.  A team.  The way I can travel might be more limited, but it is arguably safer and certainly easier to bring more with me.  We might even get some work done on the way.  It’ll certainly be less lonely, and I’ll have help when we arrive at our destination.  Slower perhaps, but still very effective. Let’s lead a few cars – or better yet a caravan – a convoy of cars, bike, vans, perhaps a few big trucks.  If my desire is that this group arrive at roughly the same time, at exactly the same place, then the rules are VERY DIFFERENT.

I must stop thinking about passing the next car, or getting around the slowpoke in the left lane.  Now I must consider the downstream impact of passing someone.  Down my chain of vehicles, will we all be able to pass?  Do we have enough room, time, skill, and power to get by that old lady in the volkswagon?  Do we need to stop at the next fuel station – can we last another 20 miles?  The complexities of navigation, communication, resourcing, and capacity really start to become important. Now consider each vehicle as a part of your company.  From motorcycle to semi-tractor, individual contributor to cross-functional business teams, we can begin to relate to the complexities of driving businesses of differing sizes through differing obstacles.  We use this analogy to look at how different the capabilities are between a startup and a large corporation.

We can imagine what it’s like to lead each different category of car through the convoy to the destination – and how important process, thought, vision, mission, and communication become to a bigger org.  We see how important it is to get on the same GPS navigation system (can company direction actually be that literal?). Although there may not be a real GPS for navigating business growth, you might be able to use this analogy to better understand the mechanics involved with driving business (pun intended!) and therefore perhaps more accurately drive your own vehicle (whatever that may be) successfully through to where it is that YOU want to arrive.

YouSendIt Technology Office

August 12, 2010

Hi,

I wanted to share a few thoughts on how YouSendIt is evolving on the technology front.

Today, YouSendIt is a proven leader in the large file transfer space. We process millions of files per month for our millions of users from large and small enterprises.

People don’t send files for the sake of sending files. These files are critical to their business processes. When the delivery of these files is blocked due to system or human labor failure, their business process is stopped, their time-to-revenue slowed and their business plans disrupted.

While our core business has been and will continue to be reliable and secure transfer of large files, we have our sights set on the broad spectrum of people-to-people collaboration within and across company boundaries.

YouSendIt recently launched a Technology Office to help us fulfill the vision of people-to-people collaboration in the business world that is being accelerated by powerful social and technological forces. To harness them, we focus on 3 key areas: Long-term Technology Strategy, Advanced Research & Development, and Industry Leadership & Evangelism. Our DNA is to build products that solve real problems with extreme ease of use. As is often the case, making things simple on the surface, requires ground-breaking creativity and hardcore computer science.

Over the past 2 years, we have continuously invested in scaling our systems. We have built a robust backend SOA-based platform that scales on demand, and maintains reliability and uptime by utilizing efficient cache-and-queue secured messaging system with distributed database architecture.

We believe that we and the world around us will be more productive if we could openly collaborate to generate and share knowledge. We would love to exchange viewpoints and ideas on how the world will evolve in the next decade, and what would be some of the interesting consequences from this transformation. We want to invite our colleagues in the industry to participate in open technical discussions on how some of the latest technology trends are shaping users’ access, sharing, and processing of information. Our hope is that these conversations will be an important learning experience for all of us, and lead us in future decision making and partnerships. If you are up for a discussion, please contact us at techoffice@yousendit.com.
